Brandy Ritz, Spokesperson and Director of Marketing Communications and Public Relations with Inman Hatchet House, had a catastrophe on her hands when her mom fell Wednesday afternoon and broke her arm. She was already struggling to get around with two fully-functioning arms, so a broken arm added to the difficulty of getting around. She heard about Spartanburg Shares, a local nonprofit loaning durable medical equipment at no charge for 90 days. Ritz’s mother needed a cane and wheelchair to help her get around while she was on the mend; equipment which Shares was able to provide. Ritz was also struck by the friendliness and compassion of the volunteers.

Inman Hatchet House recently announced its first annual barbecue fundraiser for Spartanburg Shares.  The event kicks off Saturday, March 25th at 4pm and will be offering free barbecue plates with donations encouraged.  They will also accept donations on-site of any medical equipment that is unused or no longer needed.

Anyone interested in participating in the cookoff can send a message to Inman Hatchet House’s Facebook page to receive a listing and more details (https://www.facebook.com/peachrailtavernhatchethouseinman). There will be three judges with a first, second and third place winner.  Remington Cartee Music will be providing live music with the full band from 7-10 pm.

Spartanburg Shares: A Nonprofit Weathering the Storm

A local nonprofit loaning medical equipment and supplies to the community weathered some rain as their board and volunteers attempted its first mobility and car show fundraiser

11/8/2022 | Spartanburg, S.C.

Spartanburg Shares is the kind of charity/service that doesn't get a lot of notice. "Probably because you don't need us 'til you need us!" said Jane Bird, board member. "It's true that we serve folks who have been injured or find themselves incapacitated and in need of medical equipment, so it's not an everyday need for most, quick to fall off one's radar." Jane adds, "Today we held our first ever fundraising car show - the third attempt at throwing this show since 2020! Despite the rainy forecast, we elected to forge ahead and give this damp day a chance. There was such a positive energy among the volunteers, laughing at how this poor show has faced 'pestilence and flood' for three years (the first two attempts were squandered by pandemic restrictions). We just didn't want to see a little rain stop us again." Three entries into the show included a 1961 Corvair Rampside, 1963 Corvair panel van, and a big, purple 1988 Pierce fire truck. Matt Criswell, owner of Carolina Truck Shop entered the fire truck and won the top prize.

Spartanburg Shares ended up raising about $100, still in dire need of donations. Any additional funds would be greatly appreciated.  We are thankful for our vendors who helped us, including Gullah Q Lowcountry BBQ, Cambodian Recipe, Java Up, the City of Spartanburg (for providing us EMS services), Little River Roasting and Spartanburg Community College for opening up their Downtown Campus for this community event.  Also special thanks and recognition to VCOM-Carolinas, as some of their students served at this event and also volunteer regularly with us!

Spartanburg Shares had to suspend normal operations from March 2020 to September 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.  During that time a few volunteers and board members met clients with emergency needs.  We are operating regularly again by limiting the amount of people in the building, requiring masks for all and requiring vaccinations for all volunteers and board members.

Spartanburg Shares has benefited from the help of companies and organizations including the Walmart Foundation, the Spartanburg Regional Foundation, the Episcopal Church of the Advent, Hunters for the Hungry and Doctors’ Care, to name a few.  Visit our website for more information on Spartanburg Shares – www.spartanburgshares.org.
